Monterey High School students came face to face with their own worst fears on Tuesday morning. Lubbock emergencies crews responded to a staged fatal wreck outside the high school just after 10 a.m. The wreck was part of the Shattered Dreams program being held at Monterey in preparation for prom on Saturday.
Through the program, students re-enact a drunk driving accident to remind their classmates of the tragedy that drinking and driving can bring. Sara McCunniff, a junior at Monterey High says, "It was a lot more powerful than I expected. It's dead silence and everyone is looking at the wreck and all of a sudden you hear all the sirens and see the hearse come in."
Lane Bartley, also a junior, says "When you really see it and everything is going on and all they go through, and just what could happen, it makes you feel sick to your stomach."
Also as part of Shattered Dreams, the grim reaper took one student every 15 minutes at Monterey. It demonstrates how often someone is injured or killed by a drunk driver in Texas.
