TDCJ Officials Investigate Inmate Murder - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is investigating the death of an inmate at the Montford Unit. The incident in question happened on Friday, April 30th at 11:30 p.m.

42-year-old Joe Ortiz was found in his cell, covered up and tied with a cloth. Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of death is strangulation.

TDCJ investigators say Ortiz's cell mate confessed to the killing, but no charges have been filed at this time.
