SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – Washington limited Texas Tech to just two hits and avoided a pair of late rallies to take the winners bracket game of the NCAA Washington Regional with a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Husky Softball Stadium.
With the win, the No. 16 national seed Huskies (38-17) advance to Sunday's championship game. The Red Raiders (41-16), meanwhile, will await the winner of Harvard and Maryland in an elimination game at 8 p.m. CT tonight.
"We got beat by a good team today," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "I thought Cara Custer gave us a chance to win and made some good pitches and handled the pressure especially coming home early. I was really proud of her and then of course late we gave ourselves some opportunities and didn't get some breaks and get the big hits when we needed it."
After rallying late the day before, Tech could never find a solution for the pitching combo of Kasey Stanchek and Kaitlin Inglesby as Stancheck (10-2) had a no-hitter going before a leadoff walk to start the fifth ended her day.
The Red Raiders loaded the bases moments later off Inglesby after Emily Bledsoe recorded Tech's first hit. The rally ended immediately after, however, as Logan Hall grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Tech also put its first two runners on to start the sixth as Mikey Kenney was plunked by a pitch and Adriana Perez singled up the middle. Kenney tried to advance to third on the play and was called out after falling midway to the bag.
Inglesby retired the next two hitters in order before working a perfect seventh for her team-leading fifth save of the season.
Custer (25-11) took the loss in the complete-game effort after giving up the two runs off three hits and four walks. Custer, who is playing near her hometown of Spanaway, tossed her team-leading 18th complete game of the season.
Washington got on the board in the second thanks to a Shawna Wright two-out RBI single to left. It was one of two hits in the game for Wright as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kylee Lahners brought in the Huskies' final run with another two-out hit an inning later. Washington totaled just one hit following Hays' ejection prior to the fourth inning.
The Red Raiders will look to advance to the regional championship game for the third-straight game later this evening when they face either Harvard or Maryland.
