Rattlesnake bites are the leading cause of snake bite injuries in North America. They cause approximately 82% of fatalities. The good news is those bites are rarely fatal if treated properly.
Dr. Charles Bayouth, a trauma surgeon in Lubbock, says don't try to treat a bite on your own, but just get to a doctor as soon as possible. "Last year, we had seven rattlesnake bites that we treated at Covenant. And this year alone, just in early mid May, we're now to four. So they're out there. Seems like maybe even more."
Dr. Bayouth says warm weather brings them out, and 2012 could be a record breaking year for snake bites.
