Red Raider duo advances to round of 8

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Georgia – Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar are in unchartered waters.

Texas Tech's No. 18 tandem pulled another upset on Friday, clipping California's No. 6 duo of Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the Elite Eight of the 2012 NCAA Men's Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Carvalho and Escobar, who are Texas Tech's only two All-American singles players, earned All-America doubles honors with the impressive win.

"They played as close to a perfect match as you can," said Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel. "They served exceptionally well and made them play so many volleys. We kept the pressure on them from start to finish."

Escobar, who had just finished a three-hour singles match, was re-energized in doubles play, as he and Carvalho cruised to a first set 6-3 win.

"The key game in the match was when Raony was down 0-40 and held serve in the first game of the second set," added Siegel. "After that game, they believed it was their match.

"What we did today was set the tone early."

Tech went onto to cruise to a 6-1 win in the second set and become the first Red Raider duo to advance to the Elite Eight.

"The fact that we just played (Andrews and Konigsfeldt) in California two weeks ago was a big factor," said Siegel. "We knew their tendencies."

USC's No. 2 duo of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz defeated Alabama's Jarryd Botha and Ricky Doverspike, 6-3, 7-5, to also advance to the Elite Eight.

If Carvalho and Escobar are to reach the Final Four, they must beat Johnson and Quiroz, who just led USC to its fourth straight NCAA team title earlier this week.

"We are one step closer to our goal," said Siegel. "The guys are excited and ready to play another day."
