School is out for the summer but before you know it, students will have to start preparing for another year. One change coming to Lubbock ISD that everyone will have to keep in mind is the new dress code.
I compliment the Lubbock School Board for having the courage to take this major step forward.
The 2012-13 school year will force students to stop using extreme hair color, showing off tattoos, styling Mohawks, and sporting baggy pants.
This stricter dress code is a step in the right direction but one that will not be easy to enforce at first.
One sure way to guarantee officials will not have to deal with problem dressers is to eliminate the need for change in our younger students.
I think this dress code should be expanded to require elementary and middle school students to wear uniforms. Uniforms that give every parent a list of simple options and colors.
If they have the right kind of dress habits going into high school, they are more likely not to violate a more lenient high school dress code.
I would ask the School Board to expand on this good policy and consider uniforms for K through eighth grade students.
I believe the result would be an even better atmosphere for learning with less enforcement and punishment needed all the way around.
