Henryville graduation moved to Scottsburg High

SCOTTSBURG, IN (WAVE) - Three months to the day since tornadoes ravaged Southern Indiana destroying Henryville High School, seniors held their graduation ceremony on Saturday, not at their home school but miles up the road at Scottsburg High School.

Henryville principal Troy Albert says it's a bittersweet day.

"It's an end of a chapter. Its a blessing, I'm glad to be at this point for the class of 2012. I'm excited for them, my son's one of them so it's exciting for him and my family. It is just a day to rejoice so and we're blessed to be here and at this point to end this year right."

Senior Allison Knox is ready to put the past behind and move on.

"Sad that we're all moving on but just relieved to finally get going on a new chapter of our lives."

Fellow student Sara Henson is headed to IU Bloomington to major in athletic training after graduation and she says March 2nd will be a birthday that she'll never forget.

"It was hard it was a crazy day. A lot of emotions went through my mind that day, I was excited it was my birthday then sad because of the tornado. I was confused."

So many students wanted to have graduation at Henryville but due to the damage it just wasn't possible. So, Scottsburg High reached out to help. But a little piece of home was still brought along.

"I just think it's a great honor." Said Principal Albert. "The Uhls did a great job of putting that together. The family of a senior wanted to have a piece of Henryville here on site, so at the front you see the brick from the building and in the back you see a piece of the gym floor."

He's talking about Linda Uhl who's husband Jeff owns Uhl Turf and had the equipment to make the move happen. Linda's son Griffin is graduating and moving on to play football for the University of Louisville Cardinals. Linda helped bring a couple of pieces of Henryville High to graduation via her husband's trucks, including part of the gym floor.

"I knew that three pieces of the floor had been salvaged one of the pieces, which is the one we brought up, the hornet itself (Henryville mascot) and another smaller piece. I also knew that some of the bricks had been salvaged."

Those bricks formed a wall next to the podium where each student walked by to get their diplomas and the piece of gym floor was out front to welcome students to their graduation. All reminders that home or school in this case, is really where the heart is.

Saturday was the 101st graduating class from Henryville High School and the only one to graduate off school grounds. Principal Albert says that he's pretty hopeful that in August Henryville High will be back open to welcome students for the fall and the class of 2013 can look forward to graduating there this time next year.
