Lubbock police have worked eight bank robberies in the past year. Four of them happened in the last two months. Here is a list of the different banks hit in the past two years:
"That certainly is an increase in bank robberies that we've had in the past," said Claude Jones, Lubbock Police Chief.
NewsChannel 11 found out that banks are taking heavy action. Two weeks ago, two banking institutions called the Lubbock Police Department asking for help. "Some of the banks have requested extra security," says Jones.
City Bank Branch Manager Susan McEndree says they called Lubbock police. Their pushing point? McEndree says it's because their branch on 50th and Indiana was hit twice in two weeks. "Our employees hadn't quite gotten over the first one to handle the second one. It was very traumatic," she said.
And because of that traumatic experience, City Bank decided it was time to beef up their security at all City Bank branches with extra police presence. "They'll (robbers) know that someone is in here trying to protect the premises and employees and possibly that might be a deterrent for them to go somewhere else," said McEndree.
Chief Jones says branch banks tend to be easy targets and that is where some banks are requesting the extra police officers.
Police are still working on capturing at least three bank robber suspects. Police believe a man described to have a goatee, and wear a baseball cap and sunglasses may be responsible for robbing a the City Bank and the American State Bank, both located on 50th and Indiana.
Then, two other men, who are described to be wearing wigs and sunglasses are responsible for robbing the City Bank May 8th.
