It's common today for doctors to consider natural childbirth even if the mother had a c-section once before, but that's not even an option anymore at three hospitals in Massachusetts.
For the first time, officials have issued a policy that says no more vaginal deliveries after a caesarian birth, even if there's been a natural birth by that mother, too.
It's a sign of the times since some studies have shown an increased risk of complications among women who choose a vaginal birth after having had a c-section. Hospital administrators in Massachusetts say they can't afford that risk because of the current malpractice environment.
