Blood drive offers ice cream to donors this week

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

United Blood Services is offering a way for you to beat the heat and help save lives this summer.

They've partnered with Gandy's Ice Cream for their "KOOL Deal" blood drive, and all this week, anyone who comes out to donate will get a pint of ice cream.

Les Long with United Blood Services says the summer is a particularly challenging time for them because many people leave for vacation and don't usually take the time to donate.

"The hospitals continue to use 110 - 140 units of blood every day," Long said. "They don't take vacation at the hospital. So more people may have procedures and things done during the summer when they can take some vacation time."

United Blood Services is located on 48th and University.

We're also hearing emergency crews received several calls from people nearby who are worried the fire could spread to their homes. There is heavy damage to the outside of the building. The Fire Marshal has been called to the scene.  KCBD has a crew on the scene and we will continue to update this story as we receive more information. ...
