From the Texas Tech Athletics Department:
Texas Tech senior offensive lineman LaAdrian Waddle (Columbus, Texas) has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America announced Thursday.
Waddle, a 6-foot-6, 318 pound three-year letterman at left tackle, is one of 71 players across the country that have been named to the prestigious watch list that recognizes the nation's top interior lineman in college football.
Waddle is the fourth Red Raider to be named to the Outland Trophy Watch List over the past decade, joining Lonnie Edwards (2011), Brandon Carter (2009), Louis Vasquez (2008) and Rex Richards (2002).
Waddle was named All-Big 12 second team by both the Big 12 coaches and by the Associated Press. Overall, Waddle was named All-Big 12 by eight publications last season, including San Antonio Express, Columbia Tribune, Kansas City Star, Dallas Morning News and the Waco Tribune-Herald.
Waddle earned All-Big 12 honorable mention as a sophomore in 2010.
He has started 27 games in his Texas Tech career and enters his senior season in 2012 with 25 consecutive starts on the Red Raider offensive line. His 25 straight starts – spanning each of the past two seasons – is tied for the longest among active players on the Tech 2012 roster (OL Deveric Gallington).
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists to be named on Nov. 19. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner.
The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in major college football. The winner of the 67th Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century, will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 6 on ESPN.
The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 10, 2013, in Omaha, Neb.
