College football rule changes aimed at safety

Posted: Updated:

College football will look slightly different next year. That's because several rule changes will be put into action starting this fall, a move aimed at keeping players safer on the field.

Here's an outline of the new rules for 2012:

  • Kickoffs will be moved forward to the 35(instead of the 30) yard line
  • A receiving player can call for a fair catch on an onside kick
  • A receiving player on a punt play cannot jump over a blocking player to block a kick
  • When a player loses his helmet, he must come off the field for one play(treated as injury)

The last rule listed above would have effected Texas Tech last year when Red Raider quarterback Seth Doege lost his helmet one play before throwing a game-winning touchdown vs Nevada.
