Lubbock Green Party chair says bounty on signs was not serious

Clif Burnett Clif Burnett
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Chairman of Lubbock County's Green Party says his bounty on removing political campaign signs was not meant to be taken seriously. Clif Burnett of Shallowater put a post on his blog Monday, but took it down, he says, after 12 hours.

"This editor will pay a ‘cute $1' (golden dollar coin) for any small Gilbert Flores yard sign," the website said on Monday.

"I was afraid someone would take it seriously," Burnett told KCBD NewsChannel 11 on Tuesday.  "Some of these people might think I'm encouraging them to steal signs.  And that would be crossing the line."

"I didn't get a call," Burnett says. "Nothing happened."

Local attorney Chuck Lanehart says theft of campaign signs could be treated as Class C Misdemeanor Theft. Or, Lanehart says, it could also be treated as trespassing.

Late Tuesday, Lubbock Police also said allegations of theft would be treated as a Class C misdemeanor, which is roughly the equivalent of a traffic ticket.

Burnett says he was trying to make a political point. He says County Commissioner candidate for re-election Gilbert Flores put signs in the right of way areas and in people's yards without permission.

Burnett says he is not affiliated with the campaign of Flores' runoff opponent in the Democratic Primary, Lorenzo "Bubba" Sedeño.

KCBD NewsChannel 11 was able to reach Flores by phone late Tuesday night. He says he only puts signs where he has permission and he asks his supporters to follow the same rules.

Reward For Small Gilbert Flores Yardsign Announced

LCR editor Clif Burnett has decided to "clean-up" east Lubbock. This editor will pay a "cute $1"(golden dollar coin) for any small Gilbert Flores yardsign. Those wishing to collect their reward must call Clif Burnett at 832-xxxx to make arrangement to surrender their Flores red yardsign for the reward. No reward is offered for the large yardsigns. This offer is only good for one calender week starting today.
