Perhaps one of the most historical aspects of Abernathy is the Barton House.
Back in 1906, a man named Joseph James Barton created a town called Bartonsite. Bartonsite is now present-day Abernathy.
But, before the name change, Barton built the two story, Victorian style house. This high-style home was unusual for the South Plains at the time. Its elegance reflects the confidence of a wealthy Hale County rancher who overcame years of misfortune due to weather, terrain and economic recession.
The Barton House is now on display at the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock.
