Texas Tech Board of Regents name Interim President

EL PASO, TX (KCBD) -

Dr. Lawrence Schovanec, Ph.D., was named Texas Tech University's new interim president by the Board of Regents at a meeting in El Paso Friday.

Dr. Lawrence Schovanec currently serves as Dean of the Texas Tech College of Arts and Sciences.

Schovanec earned his doctorate in mathematics from Indiana University, his master's degree from Texas A&M University and his bachelor's of science degree from Phillips University. His research deals with the fields of biomechanical and physiological control systems and solid mechanics.

He has received more than $2.1 million in external funding for his research and has spoken extensively at conferences and other professional venues. He has received the President's Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the Texas Tech Teaching Academy.

Schovanec previously served as the Chair of the Texas Tech Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1999-2009.

Dr. Schovanec replaces former Texas Tech president Dr. Guy Bailey. Bailey was appointed president of The University of Alabama effective in early September.
