The number of cases of a new form of swine flu has grown from 29 last week to 145 this week. The current H3N2 virus is different from the H1N1 swine flu outbreak of 2009. The latest flu is being transmitted almost exclusively from sick pigs to people, not from person-to-person. Most patients are children who are infected after coming into contact with animals at state and county fairs. Experts think the large increase in cases is due to the number of fairs occurring nationwide now, along with increased testing for the flu. Most cases have been mild so far with just two hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.
