Alarming: 2 major water supply lakes for Lubbock critically low

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

On Thursday the newest federal Drought Monitor will be released, giving us an updated look at drought conditions for Lubbock and other West Texas Counties.  Ahead of the Drought Monitor, KCBD NewsChannel 11 did some checking on area lake levels, and some of the numbers are downright alarming.

The good news, according to the Texas Water Development Board, is that Lake Alan Henry is at 78% percent of full capacity.  It's the one bright spot in our part of Texas.

Lake Meredith, which used to be the major supplier for Lubbock and 10 other cities, is now officially categorized at 0% of capacity.  White River Lake, which supplies Crosbyton, Ralls, Post, and Spur, is at 9% capacity, according to the TWDB.  Mackenzie Lake, which serves Floydada, Lockney, Silverton, and Tulia, is listed at 0%.

Lake J.B. Thomas is at 0.39%. The Palo Duro Reservoir is at approximately 4% of full capacity.

Buffalo Springs Lake east of Lubbock is not used for municipal supply and is not listed for current capacity by the TWDB, nor is Buffalo Lake Wildlife Refuge between Hereford and Canyon.

The White River Municipal Water District, Loop, Whitharral WSC, and Spur are all under severe water restrictions.  Countless cities on the South Plains are under moderate water restrictions.
