Can Can Summer Food Drive

Starting this Friday, June 11th , the South Plains Food Bank will set up 12 food barrels as a preview to the Fifth Annual Can Can Summer Food Drive that kicks off Tuesday, June 22nd and runs through Saturday June 26th.

Locations of the barrels include:

  • United Supermarket
    • 4th and Slide
    • 82nd and Boston
  • Lowes
    • 82nd and Slide
    • 26th and Boston
  • Albertson’s
    • Loop 289 and Slide
    • 4th and Slide
    • 50th and Indiana
  • K-Mart
    • South University

The food collected through this drive will be used in food boxes given out daily to families in need. During the summer months, there is an increased demand for food boxes because children are at home, unable to eat breakfast and lunch at school. On average between 400 and 500 boxes are distributed every week to the hungry.

By the end of June, the warehouse at the Food Bank is empty. Even, the food donated during the ‘U Can Share’ and ‘Letter Carriers’ Food’ Drives is gone, thus making the Can Can Summer Food Drive a necessity.

The South Plains Food Bank truck and volunteers from Covenant and the Food Bank will be at the sites daily from 11 am until 6:30 p.m. , accepting food and money donations. This year’s goal is 60,000 pounds of non-perishable food items.

Mobile food drive sites during the Can Can Summer Food Drive include:

  • Tuesday, June 22 – United Supermarket, 4 th and Slide
  • Wednesday, June 23 – Lowe’s Supermarket, 82 nd and Slide
  • Thursday, June 24 – Albertson’s Supermarket, 50 th and Indiana
  • Friday, June 25 – Super K-Mart, University Ave. and 66 th Saturday,
  • June 26 – United Supermarket, 82 nd and Boston

The Can Can Summer Food Drive leads up to the "Third Annual Too Hot To Run In The Sun Fun Run" on Saturday, June 26 th from 11 am to 6 p.m. at the United Supermarket at 82 nd and Boston . For an entry fee of $20, participants do not have to run, and the first 100 participants to register will receive a Non-Run t-shirt. Spend the day participating in the Non-Run by kicking off your shoes, relaxing and sipping a cool drink.
