Hoping to put last season's 5-7 record behind them, the Red Raiders passed their first test Saturday, beating Northwestern State 44-6 in their season opener in front of 50,236 at Jones AT&T Stadium.
All eyes were on the defense who were dead last against the run last season. However, under new Defensive Coordinator Art Kaufman, the Chain Gang didn't disappoint. They allowed the Demons only 84 total yards and a mere 13 rushing yards on 28 carries, a welcome improvement from last year.
The Air-Raid offense had 500 yards of total offense and had 37 first downs to the Demons 6.
Back from injury, Eric Stephens rushed for 58 yards of 15 carries scoring 2 touchdowns.
Seth Doege threw his line touchdown pass to Kenny Williams as Tech led 24-3 at the half.
Playing 3 quarters, Seth Doege was 23 of 34 for 199 yards and 1 touchdown and interception.
Backup Michael Brewer played the 4th quarter and threw 2 touchdown passes to Marcus Kennard to complete the 44-6 win.
Tech now goes on the road next week to visit Texas State.
