The holiday weekend is quickly coming to a close, but according to Lubbock DPS people in the Hub City have had a need for speed as well.
"We have been out and we have seen the number of speeding violations increase just today, people trying to hurry to get where they are going in a short amount of time," said Corporal John Gonzalez of Lubbock DPS.
"Starting yesterday and today we've seen a very large up-flow and increase in traffic coming back into town from a lot of travelers. Yesterday we saw a lot of travelers leaving town from the football game from the previous day as well."
He says most offenders have been traveling on Highway 84 which is a main artery for those going to and from lakes as well as college students coming back to Tech after a weekend away, and he says people need to realize the dangers of reckless driving.
"Obviously you know, we'd much rather give a citation than have to go pick up the pieces and tell a family member that their family's not coming back because they refused to slow down."
Another important thing to remember is not to drive while distracted.
"If you're watching and have family traveling please encourage them (to) please don't use the cell phone or text while driving, coupled along with speed the crashes are happening, the injuries result or fatal crashes," said Gonzalez.
"We just want everybody to have a safe holiday, and obviously we've been quiet on some of the crashes. Unfortunately, we have had crashes around Lubbock County - thankfully nothing death related or fatal related, - but again that doesn't mean it can't happen. So we encourage people to be vigilant out there and pay attention."
