Kidney disease is becoming more common in our community and across the country, with an estimated 13% of the population being affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the U.S. Although this number is growing, many attempts are being made to identify people at risk, to educate those who have been diagnosed, and more importantly, to reverse the trend and diminish the incidence of this disease.
A symposium will be held for people in the Lubbock area with kidney disease, both those on dialysis and those in the mid to late stages of CKD (stages 3-4), and their family members. Our goal is to provide education in the areas of treatment options for kidney disease, prevention, and patient involvement.
The symposium, "Empower Yourself: Take Control of Your Kidney Disease" will be held September 19, 2012, at the Knipling Conference Center, 21st and Louisville, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. This symposium is offered free of charge to patients, family members and caregivers. Continental breakfast and lunch will also be offered at no charge.
The Educational Curriculum will include Hemodialysis, Peritoneal, and Home Hemo Options; Understanding Kidney Transplant; Preventing Kidney Disease; Coping with Depression or Inspiring Family Members to be Supportive Health Partners, and Understanding Diabetes. A patient panel is also planned.
