In the future, women may be able to get an idea of how much time is left on their biological clock before it stops ticking. British researchers have come up with a model that combines an ultrasound measurement of the ovaries with a mathematical formula to determine how many healthy eggs are left and at what age the woman will enter menopause.
Researchers note that if further studies show the formula holds up, it could lead to a screening test to predict fertility. They are already testing the model in cancer patients whose fertility has been affected by treatments like chemotherapy. The study is published in the journal Human Reproduction.
