Men have the little blue pill. Women may soon have a patch to fight sexual dysfunction.
It's a testosterone patch called Intrinsa. In a study of 500 women who had undergone hysterectomies, it helped boost the libido in half the group.
"The idea that adding that testosterone, in a safe fashion, to help improve this lack of sexual desire, sexual performance, is very significant because it really impacts a large number of women and their lives," says Yvonne Braver, M.D., internist.
Dr. Braver says more study is needed to determine the potential side effects and to learn how long a woman can stay on this therapy, but the hope is that someday this patch could be a breakthrough for women who suffer from sexual dysfunction.
