EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Pickens County deputies said one of their own is recovering after a suspect tried to shoot him in the head and beat him up with "superhuman strength."

Assistant Sheriff Tim Morgan said a warrants office Master Deputy Scott Ticknor had stopped at the M Mart on Highway 178 in Liberty about 2 p.m. Monday to get a drink when he recognized a motorcyclist pull up at the gas pumps.

Ticknor watched the suspect, 28-year-old Trenton Black, begin to fill it up with gas, according to the deputy's report. The report said an investigation into the stolen motorcycle indicated that Black had it.

The deputy knew it was Black because he had arrested or transported him to the sheriff's office about 10 times during his career, the report said.

When Black saw the deputy, who was not dressed in a uniform, he acted as if he was going to flee, prompting the deputy to run up to him, then a struggle ensued, Morgan said. He said the deputy had called for backup prior to approaching Black.

The report said Ticknor was able to get the key out of the ignition, and tried to shove Black and the bike into the gas pump when Black yelled at him, "Get off me, Tick."

While fighting, Black hit the deputy with his helmet, a gas hose and bit him, according to Morgan. Both men punched each other, with Ticknor ending up on the ground and Black was able to pull out a gun, Morgan said.

Black held the gun at the deputy's head, who was able to push the gun away as Black fired a shot at him, flying by his ear, then they continued to struggle for control of the gun, according to Morgan.  Ticknor said Black fired a second shot, but missed him.

In the report, the deputy noted that Black appeared to have "superhuman strength."

Two witnesses were able to assist the deputy during the struggle. Ticknor was able to get the gun out of Black's hands and throw it away, allowing one man to put in his pocket, the report said.

Then a fuel truck driver ran up to ask what he could do, the deputy yelled "choke him," which he did, allowing Black to lose energy and the deputy was able to handcuff him, according to the report.

Black was finally taken into custody and arrested. Morgan said Ticknor's hearing was damaged in the shooting, in addition to suffering minor injuries.

He was charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, attempted murder, assaulting an officer during arrest, and receiving stolen goods valued between $2,000 and $10,000.

Black is being held on no bond at the Pickens County Detention Center.
