Tuesday night was a special one for Lamesa volleyball co-coaches, Patty and Tippy Browning. Before the Tornado's match with Sweet Water, the two were recognized for amassing 900 career victories on the volleyball court.
"It's not so much about me or Patty," says Tippy. "It's the kids who have come through and played. Without them there's no wins. But it's a great feeling."
Patty and Tippy—twin sisters—have coached Lamesa's middle school and high school volley ball teams for 45 years. Along with winning 900-plus games, the Browning sisters have enjoyed tremendous postseason success as well. The two coaches have led Lamesa volleyball to 21 district championships, four regional titles and even brought Lamesa a state championship in 1987.
"We've always had great support from the community," says Patty. "That's what really made all of that possible."
The sisters grew up in Amarillo where they say "they did everything together" including playing basketball and volleyball through high school.
They began coaching at Lamesa in 1967, where Patty took over the high school team and Tippy at the middle school.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Coming into this season, Patty and Tippy have led the Lamesa Tornado's to the playoffs in 19 straight seasons.
