Slaton's Harvey House Receives Grant

It's been vacant since the early 1980's, but soon, the Harvey House in Slaton will be open once again.

On Saturday, Congressman Randy Neugebauer presented Mayor Don Kendrick of Slaton with a check for $560,000. The grant from the Federal Economic Development Agency will help restore Slaton's last Santa Fe Railroad building.

"The restoration of this facility does a lot of different things, and one of those is that it preserves a very important part of the heritage of Slaton and West Texas and Lubbock county," said Randy Neugebauer, Congressman, District 19.

When restored, the Slaton Harvey House dining room will be recreated as close as possible to its original look. It will also house a history museum and a research library.

Plans also call for a bed and breakfast on the second floor.
