United Supermarkets, LLC (United), and its family of partners and suppliers raised $76,525.67 for the Lubbock Area United Way at the 21st annual Jacky Pierce Charity Classic. Since 1991 the tournament has raised more than $2.8 million for local charities.

The tournament was held Aug. 26-27 at Lubbock Country Club and raised a record $220,000 for the 14 United Way organizations which serve United's trade area. Monies were awarded on a percentage basis according to store sales in the region served by each United Way.

"The Lubbock Area United Way does so much good for our community and we support their mission of advancing the common good and creating opportunities for a better life for all," said Tommy Wilkins, Jacky Pierce Charity Classic Chair.

Glenn Cochran, Lubbock Area United Way chief executive officer and David Alderson, campaign char, attended a special check presentation and celebration dinner Sunday evening at Lubbock's Cap*Rock Winery.

Additional United Way chapters benefiting from the tournament include: United Way of Abilene; United Way of Amarillo & Canyon, Dalhart; Graham Area United Way; Hutchinson County United Way, Borger; United Way of Moore County, Dumas; North Texas Area United Way, Wichita Falls; Ochiltree United Way, Perryton; Pampa United Way; Plainview Area United Way; Scurry County United Way, Snyder; United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County, Fort Worth and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.

The tournament is named in honor of United Supermarkets' longtime produce director, Jacky Pierce, who guided the event from its infancy until losing a lengthy battle with cancer in August 2002. The tournament was renamed in 2003 to honor his memory.

"In addition to raising funds for a tremendous cause, this tournament also is our way of remembering and honoring the legacy of our friend and partner Jacky Pierce," added Wilkins.
