Bone Density Tests Help in Osteoporosis Protection

Osteoporosis is a skeletal problem that affects both men and women. Doctors recommend that everyone over the age of 65 take a bone density test to protect themselves.

It's the most common skeletal problem affecting one in two women and one in four men over the age of 50. We're talking about Osteoporosis.

People know it's a scary diagnosis, but a big problem is most don't have a clue whether they have the disease or not, until they break a bone and realize how brittle their bones have become. That's why another type of screening can make such a difference. A bone density screening is a non-invasive test that takes about 15 minutes.

"It's a treatable condition, and it's important to appropriately diagnose it," says Dr. Geetha Gopalakrishnan.

A bone density test is recommended for all women over the age of 65 or for women who are post-menopausal with a strong family history of osteoporosis. The reason post-menopausal women are more at risk is that's when their body stops producing estrogen which can accelerate bone loss.

Osteoporosis can lead to hip fractures, which can lead to complications that can be life threatening. We checked around Lubbock and found out that bone density screenings are normally several hundred dollars, but here's the good news.

The folks at Caprock Drugstore are making that test available for just $25. So, if you'd like to test your bone density, call Caprock Drug to make an appointment. That number is (806) 792-2713.
