Mayor honors Doug Carlson at Hunger Heroes Luncheon

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Dozens of individuals and organizations were recognized today for their service in the fight against hunger.

It was all part of the Mayor's Hunger Heroes Luncheon today.

Each Hunger Hero has made a difference in thousands of lives through their acts of service.

Erin Hardin is a volunteer for St. Johns United Methodist Church and says she can't imagine not doing this.

"It means so much," Hardin said. "It means a chance for me to put names and faces to need. We hear so much about this just..amorphous...need that's growing...and it's really different to meet families, hear stories, hear how they're working to try and keep their head above water."

Last year the Hunger Hero Committee started a new tradition of designating a Hunger Hero of the year award.

Doug Carlson was named this years Hunger Hero.

He had served the South Plains Food Bank since 1999 before passing away in July of last year.
