Exciting news today from a giant federal project designed to analyze the thousands of changes in the DNA of cells that lead to different cancers. All that could bring a new road map for new personalized treatments of breast cancer. This, because the study provides the strongest evidence yet that breast cancer is not one disease, but four major types, with many subtypes.
Dr. Mathew Elli said "This is really a giant step toward understanding the fundamentals of what breast cancer is so that we can develop effective new therapies one patient at a time."
Doctors are hopeful that some drugs already on the market to treat melanoma or leukemia, for example, may also be able to knock out a certain type of breast cancer. Exciting news, but unfortunately it will still take years of study to determine which drug treatment matches which one of the four types of breast cancer.
