LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock Police released the dash cam video of the pursuit of Jontel Monique Perry, 17, who allegedly attempted to steal a car on September 19, 2012. Police said Perry stole a Ford Taurus at 24th and Kewanee.

Perry did not realize two-year-old Mikah Vestal was in the back seat, police say. She then dropped him off strapped in a car seat 8 blocks away at 2800 Genoa. Perry continued to flee, and police believed Vestal was still inside the car.

Police followed Perry until she fled from the car at the intersection of Quaker and South Loop 289.

Lubbock Police Dept. Sgt. Jonathan Stewart said the officer's actions in this case followed protocol.

"The number one priority is to recover that child, so if that pursuit lasts for miles or hours, the top priority is to recover that child safely," said Stewart.

Perry is still in jail held on 5 charges that include kidnapping charges, unauthorized use of a vehicle, evading arrest and endangering a child.
