LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech junior transfer forward Jackie Patterson was named the Big 12 Conference 2012-13 Preseason Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday, in a vote by the league's coaches.
"This is a great honor for Jackie and our program in the preseason," Tech head coach Kristy Curry said. "I think she realizes she has a lot of hard work ahead and this award come March will mean the most."
Patterson joins Dominic Seals (2007-08) and Patrice Edwards (2004) as the only Tech players to be chosen for the preseason award.
The6-foot-1 Patterson averaged 16.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in her two-year career at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. The Frisco, Texas, native was a two-time NJCAA All-American and led the No. 2 Lady Dragons to a school-best 36-1 record and an appearance in the NJCAA national championship game last season.
Players are voted on by Big 12 conference coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
