How's it goin' West Texas?
Let me start by saying how excited and honored I am to be a part of the KCBD NewsChannel 11 sports staff! Sports have been such a huge part of my life from such a young age, that it would have been a mistake for me to do anything BUT cover sports for a living. Whether it is playing sports, which I did competitively through high school, watching sports, which I have all my life, or covering them, which has been my daily routine from college 'til now, the passion I have for the games, the teams and the players themselves, is something I hope shines through my work and is felt by everyone watching at home.
I'm coming to Lubbock, Texas, from Athens, Ohio, the home of Ohio University. This past June I graduated from that special place with a degree in Broadcast Journalism from the prestigious E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. As a Bobcat, I spent the majority of my time at the local news station--the WOUB Center for Public Media--located on-campus. At WOUB, I dove head first into sports journalism from Day One and became proficient in covering sports through every form of media possible. I anchored sports on the nightly news program, 'NewsWatch', I was a radio personality for WOUB's sports talk show 'Sports Beat', and I was part of an amazing sports staff that made sure the station sports webpage was always filled with new and outstanding content that ranged from local high school sports to Ohio University athletics.
My biggest accomplishment in college was hosting WOUB's most watched program, 'Gridiron Glory' a high school football show that aired live on Friday nights. As host, I helped the show become an Emmy Award winning student production for its outstanding coverage. It was the show's first such award since I had been at Ohio and it's an accomplishment I'll always cherish.
This is my second stint living in Texas, as I lived in Flower Mound from 1997-2000. I'm originally from Kansas and spent the majority of my life in Ohio, but coming back to the Lone Star State is something I couldn't be more excited about!
As far as my sports teams go, I'm as die-hard as it gets with every one of them. The Dallas Cowboys, the Atlanta Braves and Kansas Jayhawks basketball are the lucky 3. Some question how I can be a fan of teams so geographically across the map, but I promise there's a back story for every one of them! Also, I've always been a huge Big 12 supporter and am thrilled to be covering Texas Tech. Guns Up!
In my free time I enjoy playing sports recreationally (I plan on helping Pete win many more "Beat Pete challenges!), I'm always up for taking on any and all challengers to a game of Madden or MLB The Show on PS3, and I enjoy going out and meeting new people. I'm also a big country music fan and firmly believe there isn't a better artist in the industry than Eric Church!
Being a KCBD sports reporter/anchor is my first job out of school and I promise to give it everything I've got!
If you ever see me out and about, I hope you stop and say hello! I'd love to get to know you! If you're on Twitter be sure and follow me for local sports coverage, @_BlakeBrodie.
