Home Depot to host family fire safety event on Saturday

WHAT: The Lubbock Home Depot store will host a safety event in celebration of October National Fire Safety Month. The event features fire safety tips and demonstrations from local emergency personnel, face painting and activities for children including The Home Depot Kids Workshop where they will build and paint a fire truck from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. 
 
The fire safety event also will feature local representatives from the Lubbock Fire and Police Departments. Participants will have the opportunity to experience a smoke house and learn fire safety techniques. 
 
All stores will host a fire safety workshop every Saturday in the month of October from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. The workshop will include the following:

• Discover and remove fire hazards in your home during National Fire Safety Month and learn how to create an escape plan for your home

• Find out what kind of fire extinguishers to install, where to place them and how to use them

• Learn how to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and batteries and how to replace them

WHERE: The Home Depot, 2615 50th Street, Lubbock, TX 79413  
 
WHEN: Saturday, October 6, 2012 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

WHY: According to the National Fire Protection Agency, U.S. fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires in 2011. In the same year, there was a civilian fire injury reported every 30 minutes and a civilian fire death reported every 175 minutes.
