Texas Tech football provides huge boost to local economy

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

As students camp out in anticipation for the Texas Tech football game against the Oklahoma Sooners, there's another reason to get excited about the football frenzy. As hundreds of people flood into the Lubbock area to watch the game, millions of dollars are pumped into the local economy.

"They're here for two or three days. They eat, shop, fill their cars with gas, they stay in a hotel and then leave. They are an extreme economic boost to Lubbock," Rob Meyer, the Lubbock Hotel and Motel Association President said. "I don't know the exact amount but I was say it's about $2 to $5 million dollars these games bring in."

As of Friday evening. Meyer says most of the hotels around Lubbock only had a few available rooms and those would more than likely be booked by Saturday morning. He says as soon as the football schedule comes out his hotels are immediately 65% booked in advance for the home games. "It will pretty much be a parade of people in Tech gear leaving the hotels, getting into their cars and heading to the Jones," Meyer said.

With fans packing the Jones, Lubbock will be packed with people willing to spend money, keeping the bars busy and the restaurants rushing with customers.
