Meningitis outbreak appears to be more widespread

Posted: Updated:

A member of the Senate has asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into the meningitis outbreak, which appears to be more widespread than officials first believed.  Today, the CDC predicted as many as 14,000 could still be at risk. The death toll has climbed to 14 now with at least 170 others infected.  That's a hard number to determine since it can take as long as a month or see the symptoms like a severe headache, slurred speech, or balance problems. The outbreak has been linked to possibly tainted steroid injections.  But this is fungal meningitis, not viral, so it is not contagious.  It cannot be passed from person to person.
