High winds, hail, brief tornado touchdowns reported in Hale County

A Tornado Watch remains in effect for Lubbock and surrounding counties. The Tornado Warning for Hale and Floyd County has expired.

We had reports of up to 2-inch hail and winds near 65 miles per hour near Hale Center and Plainview and reports of brief tornado touchdowns on FM 37 and another moving NE near Hale Center around 7 p.m. with reports of baseball size hail on the ground in Hale Center.

Later tonight through early tomorrow there will be a potential for severe weather, including large hail, high winds and heavy rain. A front will move thru the region Saturday morning bringing drier air, gusty winds and warmer temps, just in time for the Tech game. Lows will be in the 60s tonight and Saturday back in the 70s. Storms may impact area high school games tonight.

The main severe weather hazards include large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. However, there is at least a small threat of tornadoes this evening and overnight tonight, favoring area along the Texas/New Mexico border.
