A loophole that allowed thousands of Texas educators to collect both a teacher's pension and Social Security spousal benefits closes Wednesday.
Since most teachers in Texas do not contribute to Social Security, they are not eligible for full benefits if their spouse dies. The loophole allowed retired teachers to collect both by working as little as one day as a clerk or janitor. Under the new law, retired teachers would have to work five years before receiving both.
Lubbock Independent School District officials tell us that several hundred teachers in the district have explored this option in the last couple weeks.
