Researchers at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center are finding that by injecting a tiny capsule of heat generating cells into the tummies of mice, they can turn their white or bad fat, which stores fat in the body, into brown fat. Brown fat is good because it revs up the metabolism.
In their studies, it helped the mice lose about 20 percent of belly fat in about three months. But...they later gained it back. More importantly, researchers say the injection helped reduce visceral fat. That's the bad fat that surrounds the organs, and it contributes to heart disease.
So, scientists are hoping they can develop this injection into a vaccine. Maybe not for weight loss, but for protection against dangerous visceral fat in the elderly or others who aren't able to exercise.
