New recommendations suggests pregnant women get whooping cough vaccine

Posted: Updated:

A federal advisory panel is recommending all pregnant women get a whooping cough vaccine. That's because this year is on track to be the worst for whooping cough since the 1950's. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there have been more than 32,000 cases nationwide and 16 deaths. The vaccine would protect newborns because they are too young to get the shot. It's only the second time vaccines have been recommended for pregnant women. Expectant moms are strongly encouraged to get a flu shot as well. The federal government is expected to adopt the panel's recommendations.
