We won't feel the effects of Hurricane "Sandy" out here when it hits the East coast, but we can still learn from a safety alert the USDA is sending out right now for when we suffer power outages at some point here. The USDA says anytime the lights go out, food safety is a big concern. The guidelines are that a refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about four hours if it's left shut tight. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours, but again, only if it is left shut.
