Cooper volleyball goes ‘Next Level’

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock-Cooper High School is enjoying a record-setting volleyball season. Already 28 victories (most in program history), a district championship, a berth in regional's and now, just two wins from the school's first ever trip to the state tournament.

"It's been an incredible season," head volleyball coach, Courtney Pesterfield said. "We have eight seniors on this team which is unusual to have that many. But when I started they were in eighth grade and they've gone through the system and have completely bought in."

Cooper volleyball isn't new to success. Their gymnasium is filled with commemorative banners from past years and last season they finished undefeated in district play. But despite the program's regular season success, they lost early in last year's district tournament, continuing a trend of early postseason exits.

"We came into this season very motivated," senior Kati Macha said. "We wanted to show people that we are a good team and that we are capable of doing big things and building on the past."

That motivation was felt team-wide. Even prompting the creation of the mantra "Next Level", a message the team has carried with them throughout summer workouts all the way through this record-setting season.

"Next level has been the most motivating thing to happen since my freshman year," senior Katy Headrick said. "Whether it's in practice, the weight room, or a game, we are always striving to take things to the next level."

"The team, the school, our fans have completely bought into ‘Next Level'", Pesterfield said. "We have reached the next level as far as reaching regionals, now we want to go even further, win more games and take it to the state tournament."

Next up for Cooper is Stephenville. A former 4-A school that moved to 3-A before this season. The match is Friday at 3 o'clock p.m. at Snyder High School.
