LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Texas Tech Coach Tommy Tuberville stirred up media controversy and outraged fans Saturday when he made physical contact with one of his assistant coaches, knocking his hat and headset off.

The Red Raiders had just taken a penalty for having too many men on the field when Tuberville appeared to grab or strike offensive graduate assistant Kevin Oliver.

The incident provoked a flood of comments from KCBD viewers.

KCBD viewer Ron Mann asked, "Is this acceptable on national TV for a Tech head coach?"

While Danny Hendrie thought the incident was being exaggerated.

"Tuberville hit the guy's headphones," Hendrie said. "Stop acting like he's suddenly the worst human to ever walk the earth."

Tuberville defended the action in his post-game press conference.

"I reached to grab him because he was on the field," Tuberville explained. "I tried to get him off it and when  I pulled, I missed his shirt and I grabbed his microphone off his head. I was trying to get him off the field. He's standing on the field, we're trying to get him off it and the referee's standing there. There wasn't anything to it. It was just one of those deals where I missed his shoulder and ended up grabbing the microphone on his headset."
