Tuberville says he apologized to assistant but denies hitting him

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

During a Monday morning press conference, Texas Tech Coach Tommy Tuberville said he apologized to offensive graduate assistant Kevin Oliver for the sideline outburst that occurred during Saturday's game against Kansas.

"After watching the film when I got home, it was obvious what a lot of people were upset about. And it upset me, too," Tuberville said.

Video of the incident where he knocked Oliver's hat and headset off went viral on the web immediately after the game.

"You don't do things like that," Tuberville said. "It was obvious I reached up and grabbed his headset and pulled on it. Heat of the battle. Sometimes some things happen that you'd like to take back."

"That was a tough game," he said. "We were fighting hard."

"I've got to hold myself to higher regard than that, and usually do," he said.

Tuberville insisted, however, that he did not slap or hit the assistant.

"You guys know me better than that," he said. He said he has never hit anyone and was disappointed people said he did.

Coach Tuberville said it was time to move on and focus on Oklahoma State.

While the incident only lasted a few seconds, it instantly caused controversy across campus. "I don't think it was out of line enough for it to be publicized this much," Tech freshman Diamond Williams said.

"It was nice for him to apologize, but the act is already done. No matter what you say it is still going to be out there, the video will still be on YouTube and it tarnishes his reputation," freshman Elliot David added. "He didn't need to do that, and it was a bit uncalled for."

Others see both sides like student Travis Lane. "I can see both ways of whether he did right or whether he did wrong," Lane said. "I think every coach does something like that. This just happened to be caught on national television so it's a little more publicized."
