Lubbock Woman Says Recovering From West Nile Was A Struggle

The road to recovery from West Nile has been longer for a Lubbock woman.

NewsChannel 11 introduced you to Danielle Sweat in September of 2003. At the time of that interview she was only 20-years old and had spent a month in the hospital battling West Nile. According to doctors, Sweat was expected to make a full recovery with plenty of therapy.

Living with the West Nile Virus
So far this year, Lubbock County leads the state, with nine confirmed human cases. Now, a 20-year-old Lubbock resident shares details about her struggle with the virus.

Almost a year later, she says her immune system has weakened but she has recovered. "My age, I think that is how I recovered from it if I had been younger I think it would have killed more or left me in a wheel chair for the rest of my life," said Sweat.

NewsChannel 11 also spoke with Ken Condon at the Lubbock Health Department. He says so far there are no confirmed cases of West Nile in Lubbock, but the big message is prevention.

So here are a few tips:

  • Wear insect repellent containing DEET.
  • Stay indoors at dusk and at dawn.
  • Dress appropriately by wearing long pants or long sleeves.
  • Drain all standing water in your yard to prevent mosquitos from breeding.
