Gamecocks finish off perfect home season; beat Wofford 24-7

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS/AP) -

Senior running back Kenny Miles rushed for a career-high 127 yards and one touchdown to help lead No. 12 South Carolina to a 24-7 victory over Wofford on Senior Day Saturday.

South Carolina said good-bye to 29 seniors as Miles carried the ball a career-high 27 times, averaging 4.7 yards per touch. It was his fourth career 100-yard rushing game. Miles also pulled down four passes for 27 yards.

The game got off to a slow start as the teams battled through a scoreless first quarter. The Gamecocks eventually struck first with a 13-play, 51-yard scoring drive that ate up more than five minutes of clock. Miles did most of the damage on the drive as he rushed for 43 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown run that gave South Carolina a 7-0 lead at the 14:56 mark of the second quarter.

Plus, the Gamecocks were without disruptive defensive end Jadeveon Clowney due to a foot and knee injury.

"He didn't practice all week," said Coach Steve Spurrier. "We thought he would be okay by Thursday and he couldn't push off or get in his stance."

Chaz Sutton started in Clowney's place.

The victory gave Spurrier his 64th win in eight seasons with the Gamecocks (9-2), tying him with Rex Enright for most ever in program history.

"I haven't thought about this one too much, the next one will be bigger," said Spurrier.

But it wasn't until a 17-point fourth quarter that Spurrier and South Carolina could rest easy in this one.

"You just keep playing and getting your guys to try as hard as they can," said Spurrier. "It worked out for us with those two plays in the fourth quarter that put them away. I was relieved."

Adam Yates' 23-yard field goal broke a 7-all tie with 11:57 to go. After the Terriers (8-3) failed on a 4th & 1 at their 34, Connor Shaw threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Ace Sanders to widen the lead.

Moments later, Wofford's Eric Breitenstein fumbled and Akeem Auguste returned it 31 yards for a touchdown, making it 24-7.

It was the Gamecocks 11th straight win at Williams-Brice Stadium and completed their first perfect run at home (7-0) since 1987.

USC has won the last 15 games against the Terriers.

South Carolina will close out the regular season next Saturday on the road against rival Clemson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Clemson, S.C.

The contest will be televised nationally on either ESPN or ESPN2.
