A fire destroyed a Shallowater home Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out around four p.m. in the 9500 block of FM 1294. The family of four was not home at the time, however, numerous animals were rescued from the house and unfortunately dog died.
Shallowater, West Carlisle and New Home fire departments responded to the home and had the fire contained by five p.m. At one point, part of the second floor of the house collapsed inside.
As of now, the exact cause of the fire is unknown, however they believe it could be electrical. The family thinks it started downstairs near the fire place. Bill Curnow, with the Red Cross warns residents to be extra careful as you heat up your home this winter.
"As the temperatures start to drop, make sure your heating your house safely. Make sure that you don't leave ashes unattended and that there's plenty of space around space heaters. So as you're staying warm, you're doing it safely," Curnow said.
The property does have a back house on it and that is where the family will be staying. The Red Cross is assisting the family with food, clothing and bedding at this time.
