Doctors have a new tool to help them determine if a mole is melanoma, which is the scariest kind of skin cancer. The new device is called the 'Melafind'. Studies have shown it can identify melanoma 98 percent of the time without cutting into the skin.
Dr. Jorge Garcia-Zuazaga said, "The software has over 10,000 images of melanoma in there, so by creating this three dimensional picture the computer creates an algorithm and compares this images with the melanoma pictures."
The device takes a picture of the mole and gives the doctor a second opinion. This will help make the decision whether the mole should be removed or not. Hopefully it may be ideal for patients with a lot of moles or a history of melanoma.
The device is FDA approved, but not yet covered by insurance.
