According to AAA on Dec. 17, the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $3.25, the lowest it's been in 2012. Here in Lubbock, the average price on Sunday was $2.90. With 93.3 million Americans expected to drive to their holiday destination, the savings go a long way.
"I think it's a good time to travel right now due to the gas prices. It's a lot better than the $3.50 that we saw in the past," said Lubbock resident Richard Fletcher.
The Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport was quiet Sunday afternoon, with only a few people waiting for family and friends to get in. Travelers we talked to said gas prices were a big factor in their decision to drive.
"It makes it easier on us. We'll save extra spending money," said Stephanie Ramirez."It costs less to drive your car than it does to buy a plane ticket."
Even those driving to close destinations appreciate the extra cash this time of year.
"You can buy what you want to, so I think it helps everything. You can buy your kids more stuff," said Devoisier Wiley. Wiley is excited to spend the holidays with his family and looking forward to his grandma's famous candied yams.
