LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
22-year old Austin Hasten was arrested Friday night and charged with the murder of 51-year old Michele Terry. Fire crews were called out to the Autumn Ridge apartments around 8 p.m. after a manager saw smoke coming from Terry's apartment. Upon entry, crews discovered Terry's body and homicide detectives were called to the scene.
The arrest warrant states that while officers were on scene, one was approached by Hasten. He tried to disarm the officer and after a struggle, was arrested. Police say Hasten was covered in blood, had soot on his face and smelled like gasoline. During a pat down, police discovered a knife, a woman's watch and Terry's license on his person.
Terry's vehicle was found several blocks from the complex. The warrant states the fuel door was closed, the gas cap was open and was hanging outside the closed door. Police believe Hasten siphoned gas from Terry's vehicle.
Hasten is being charged with Murder, Assault on a Public Servant, Attempting to Take a Weapon and Resisting Arrest. He is being held in the Lubbock County Jail on a $3 million bond.
